Pedro Porro has admitted he would love to go back to Spain one day, though the Tottenham right-back says it would be “very unfair” to talk about anything other than his club right now.
The 27-year-old signed a new deal before the World Cup that runs until 2031, with the option of another year. That has not stopped the links: Real Madrid and Barcelona are both said to be watching him, after Madrid lost Rodri to Hansi Flick’s side in the summer.
Porro has now addressed all of it in an interview with Cadena Ser’s El Larguero, and he did not exactly slam the door.
Pedro Porro on a return to Spain: ‘it’s a big dream of mine’
After mentioning Dani Carvajal as Real Madrid’s best right-back, presenter Manu Carreno asked what Porro would say if Los Blancos called.
“Obviously, I’d love to return to Spain someday. It’s my country, and I like the league,” Porro said. “Right now, it would be very unfair to talk about anything other than my club because I’m under contract, but obviously, I’d love to go back to Spain; it’s a big dream of mine.”
Asked whether he would suit Madrid or Barcelona better, he was careful: “I don’t know. I’ll let people decide. I consider myself a player who can adapt to any situation.”
Why Pedro Porro signed his new Tottenham contract
There is a lot of warmth towards Spurs in what he said, too. Porro left Girona for Manchester City in 2019 and has been away from Spain ever since, but he won the World Cup with La Roja in July having already sorted his future in N17.
“The club gave me the option to renew before the World Cup without knowing what was going to happen. It was a very nice gesture,” he said. “Afterwards, they gave me a great tribute; I feel very loved, and that’s very important to me. They’ve given me a good contract, although if I had waited until after the World Cup, I would have gotten more.”
On summer interest, he played it down. “There were rumours, but I was focused on doing well for my country. If there’s real interest, they call you directly, and that didn’t happen. There were clubs that enquired about my situation, but there wasn’t any real interest. I didn’t want to listen too much. Tottenham probably asked for a lot of money for me because they value me as one of the best.”
Pedro Porro and De Zerbi’s Tottenham
Porro has made five appearances this season, and we have him recalled at right-back against Crystal Palace on Saturday, with De Zerbi’s squad looking stronger than it has for weeks.
He is upbeat about where Spurs are going after two wins on the bounce. “We started poorly. We drew several matches that we could have won by small margins. We have a lot of new players, but now we have two consecutive wins, and we want to keep the streak going.”
Should Spurs worry about Pedro Porro’s Real Madrid talk?
Not yet. A long contract and a club that values him highly put Spurs in a strong spot, and by his own account Tottenham’s asking price was part of why nothing happened in the summer.
But “someday” is not “never”, and players who win the World Cup do not stop getting phone calls. If Madrid or Barcelona do come back with a real offer, Lilywhites should remember that he has told everyone exactly how he feels.
