Barcelona have asked about signing Pedro Porro in January or next summer, but money is the catch, and a Trent Alexander-Arnold return to Liverpool could yet drag Real Madrid into it.
According to Cadena SER, Hansi Flick’s side have been in touch with Porro’s camp, with the 27-year-old’s understanding with Lamine Yamal at the World Cup a big part of the appeal. Real Madrid are interested as well, though Barca look like his first choice.
The right-back only signed a long-term deal at Tottenham in June, running until 2031 with the option of another year. That hasn’t stopped the talk, particularly after he said he would love to go back to Spain one day.
Why is Pedro Porro looking at a Tottenham exit?
It comes down to Spain. Porro believes Tottenham’s poor situation could count against him with the national team, which is why he wants to get back to LaLiga. Reports in Spain earlier this month also suggested he no longer sees Spurs as the best club for him.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side have climbed to 14th, only three points above the relegation zone, going into Saturday’s home game with Crystal Palace. We have Porro recalled at right-back for that one, so for now his focus has to be on Spurs.
Barca like him, but can they pay?
This is where the Camp Nou dream gets awkward. Spanish journalist Santi Ovalle said on SER Deportivos that the interest is genuine, but the numbers were a problem last time.
“Laporta and Deco like him, but his price was too high in the summer,” Ovalle said. “Barca are going to be in trouble again with Financial Fair Play because they’ll have a lot of problems with the return to Montjuïc. I don’t think Barca are in a position to spend a lot on a full-back in the summer. But they do like him.”
He added that Yamal would be “the first person interested” in the deal, and that the dressing room would push for it if it could. Porro isn’t the only Spurs player they’ve been linked with either, after Lucas Bergvall appeared back on their radar this week.
The Trent twist at Real Madrid
Madrid’s obstacle is different: there’s no room. José Mourinho has Alexander-Arnold and Denzel Dumfries as his recognised right-backs, and he has been using Fede Valverde there anyway.
“He knows there has been interest, but right now there are two players in his position, and Valverde will play at right-back in all the important matches,” journalist Javier Herráez said on the same show. “Right now, he’s not a priority for Real Madrid, but he’s been on their radar. Who knows, maybe he could return in the summer, because Pedro Porro would love it.”
Herráez called Alexander-Arnold’s possible move back to Anfield “an option” that would help make it happen, and Liverpool have reportedly started sounding things out over a January loan. There’s a complication in Jude Bellingham’s close relationship with the Englishman, but journalist Pacojó Delgado sees a clear link.
“My bet is that Liverpool are going to push. And my bet is that Mourinho wants Pedro Porro in exchange, a player Deco also wants at Barca. But it’s my bet,” he said.
Quick answers on the Pedro Porro situation
Is Pedro Porro joining Barcelona in January?
Nothing is agreed. Barcelona have asked Porro’s camp about signing him in January or next summer, but their Financial Fair Play problems make a big fee difficult.
Do Real Madrid want Pedro Porro?
The interest is real but he is not a priority right now, with Fede Valverde, Denzel Dumfries and Trent Alexander-Arnold all at the club. A summer move is the more realistic route.
How long is Pedro Porro’s Tottenham contract?
He signed a long-term deal in June that runs until 2031, with the option of another year.
Why would Pedro Porro leave Tottenham?
He believes Tottenham’s poor situation could hurt his place with Spain, and he has said a return to Spain is a big dream of his. Barcelona appear to be his first choice.
Is January really a danger for Spurs?
I don’t think so. Barcelona can’t easily afford him, Madrid don’t have the space yet, and a contract to 2031 means Tottenham set the price. Anyone who wants him will have to spend big just to make Spurs consider it.
Summer is a different conversation. A player who has said out loud that Spain is his dream, with both giants said to like him, won’t go quiet because of one good run under RDZ. If Spurs keep climbing, that’s the best argument they have for keeping him.
