Tottenham want to sign 18-year-old playmaker who has been dubbed as the next ‘Mesut Ozil’

Tottenham Hotspur are looking to pull off an audacious swoop for 18-year-old Real Madrid playmaker Arda Guler, according to a report from Spanish publication SPORT.

Arda, dubbed as the second coming of the one and only, Mesut Ozil, joined Real Madrid in the summer, turning down the likes of Barcelona. It is safe to say though that the move has not transpired as he would have anticipated.

Guler arrived at Madrid injured. Just when he was recovering from it, he suffered yet another setback. It took a long time for his debut to come and even since, Carlo Ancelotti has not really placed a lot of trust in the teenager.

It is understandable that a 18-year-old is not going to get much game time in a team that has a midfield boasting of names like Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, Eduardo Camavinga, Aurelien Tchouameni, Federico Valverde and Jude Bellingham. Let’s not forget that the likes of Dani Ceballos and Brahim Diaz would be regular starters for any other side.

The problem for Arda Guler though is that with the exception of Kroos, Modric and to an extent Ceballos, the rest are all youngsters who are set to stay for a long time to come. There seems to be no way Arda Guler would get game time ahead of all these names.

Could Tottenham swoop in?

One club’s loss is another club’s gain. The last time a North London club signed a highly rated playmaking wonderkid from Real Madrid, he went on to become the club’s captain in less than a season. Yes, we are talking about Martin Odegaard.

Could Spurs repeat the trick with Arda Guler? Let’s be clear here, it’s not for no reason that the teenager has warranted the tag of the Turkish Messi. If Tottenham get him, he could really thrive under Ange Postecoglou.

The Australian tactician has shown time and again that he is not scared of throwing a youngster on to the pitch. If Arda Guler can show him the necessary desire in training, he would get enough and more chances under Postecoglou. Under the manager, the 18-year-old could play as the #10 but very easily also be used on the wings.

Real Madrid might be more open to letting Arda leave on a loan deal but a permanent sale might be unlikely, unless they have a buy-back options. If Tottenham decide to sign him, it remains to be seen how they go about wrapping up this deal.
