Tottenham Hotspur are set to battle German giants Borussia Dortmund for the signature of talented 18-year-old striker Semih Kilicsoy, according to Turkish outlet Turkiye Gazetesi.
Kilicsoy is a name that has been doing the rounds in the media over the past few days and maybe it’s time for Tottenham fans to start familiarizing themselves with a rather tough name to pronounce who might be a part of their ranks in the near future.
There is good reason why the North London club have been linked with a move for the Besiktas striker. In 21 games across all competitions for the Turkey side, he has scored eight goals and provided one assist.
Transfermarkt values the teenage sensation at €550k. For a player with as much potential as the forward has, that valuation is, for the lack of a better word, peanuts. There is no doubt that Besiktas would demand much more, especially considering the interest in him.
Kilicsoy has a contract with Besiktas until 2028. The ball is firmly in the Turkish club’s court. This is where Tottenham need to thread carefully as it would not be in the best of interests to overpay for an 18-year-old who is yet to prove himself at the highest level.
Not the first time the Premier League has come calling…
Tottenham won’t be the first Premier League club showing interest in the 18-year-old. Back in the January transfer window, Aston Villa under Monchi came close to signing the player, only for the deal to ultimately fall through.
When the Villains came calling, Besiktas were supposedly holding out for a €15m (£13.1m) fee to part ways with their prodigy. Come the summer, with the likes of Spurs and Dortmund involved, the price might only go North.
Tottenham need to get their priorities right ahead of the summer window. Whilst there is no doubt that Spurs have improved massively under Ange Postecoglou, they are far from the finished product. There are holes in the squad that still need to be plugged.
Spending north of £13.1m for a relatively unestablished presence in a position where we already have the in-form Richarlison and a wonderkid in Alejo Veliz doesn’t make much sense. If at all we are looking at a striker, we need an established one.
Despite all the signs pointing to Kilicsoy having a huge future in the game, right now, we need to step away from this transfer race and focus our energy elsewhere. Who know, if things pan out as expected, maybe there would be an opportunity to sign the Turkish striker in the future but that’s a story for a different time.
