Real Madrid cast a wide net for Tottenham defenders – not just Cristian Romero

Tottenham-Cristian-Romero

Tottenham Hotspur endured a difficult start to the season with question marks emerging on Ange Postecoglou and his game plans. However, the Aussie tactician has turned things around at the N17 as Spurs have regained footing in the Premier League.

After an impressive first season at the helm, Postecoglou was expected to take the club to newer heights this season. Not all of his experiments so far have paid off but it is safe to say that he is on the right track. Last weekend’s dismantling of Manchester United is evidence of just that.

Beating Manchester United in their current state isn’t something to be wowed about but it was the way that Tottenham did it that was impressive. Even when it was 11 vs 11, there was no contest and once Bruno was sent off, the question was how many goals Spurs were going to score more than anything else.

If not for Andre Onana’s heroics and Timo Werner’s woeful finishing, things could have turned uglier for Erik ten Hag. The Dutch coach would be thanking his stars that Son Heung-min did not play that game for Tottenham.

While Tottenham continue to push for Champions League qualification this season, they will know that failure to do so could see a number of their superstars leave the club at the end of the season. Cristian Romero, for example, is too good a player to be playing for a non-CL club for as long as he has.

That Real Madrid are heavily interested in signing Cristian Romero for quite some time now is no secret. As good as Rudiger and Militao are, the former is already over the hill in terms of age whilst the latter is returning from a long, ACL injury.

David Alaba is yet to return from his long-term injury and he is pretty much in the same bracket as Rudiger as well. As Real Madrid continue to assemble the Galacticos, maybe it’s time they focus their effort on not just one but a few defensive superstars.

It has now emerged that the Spanish giants’ interest in Tottenham Hotspur is not just confined to Cristian Romero. Real Madrid also dreams of signing impressive Lilywhites duo – Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro. Should they pull off the three signings, that would almost be a clean sweep of Spurs’ defence minus Destiny Udogie.

First things first – should Real Madrid come knocking and Tottenham have no choice but to sell them, it would 100% leave Tottenham much richer to reinforce the squad. However, if Spurs aim to become anything more than ‘best of the rest’, this isn’t the mentality they should operate with.

All top clubs around the world have one thing in common  – the ability to retain talent. How often do you see Real Madrid or Barcelona selling their best assets? The answer is almost never. Thus, ideally, Tottenham should not even be entertaining Los Blancos to make an offer for any of their players.

Of course, for all this to happen, we come back to the first point – the need to get Champions League football next season. Should Ange Postecoglou manage to do this, he would have a better chance of retaining these superstars and let’s wait and see how it goes.
