Rumours have been circulating that Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou could get sacked following the Lilywhites’ embarrassing 2-1 home defeat to 18th-place Ipswich Town.
A couple of weeks ago, Spurs faced a struggling Crystal Palace team in the relegation zone without a win in the season. A disappointing performance by Tottenham handed the London side their first league victory. Newly promoted side Ipswich were also without a win but managed to take home all three points after a spirited performance at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The Australian manager was booed at the full-time whistle, with plenty of speculation about his future at Tottenham. To his credit, Postecoglou took full responsibility and vowed to fix the inconsistency which has plagued the North London side this season.
Ange Postecoglou takes full responsibility for bad performances
“That’s (the inconsistency) down to me,” Postecoglou said. “That’s my responsibility. The inconsistency we’re having this year, ultimately it comes down to me and my approach and something I need to try and fix.”
Despite Daniel Levy’s history of not being too patient with managers, reports suggest that Postecoglou’s managerial position at Tottenham is currently safe. The Australian led Spurs to a fifth-place finish last season, narrowly missing out on Champions League football by just two points.
This campaign has been inconsistent, with impressive wins against Manchester City and Aston Villa overshadowed by losses against Palace and Ipswich. Spurs currently sit 10th in the Premier League, 7th (out of 36 teams) in the Europa League, and are through to the Quarter-Finals of the EFL Cup. While a club of Tottenham’s stature would be expected to be doing better, it’s not disastrous enough for Levy to lack Postecoglou.
Postecoglou is being backed more than previous managers
Postecoglou’s contract also suggests that he will be backed more than the previous Spurs managers. The Australian signed a four-year contract with Tottenham, significantly longer than what Antonio Conte (18-month contract) and Nuno Espirito Santo (two-year contract) were handed. Even Jose Mourinho was given a shorter contract than Postecoglou (three-and-a-half years).
Although his job appears safe currently, Postecoglou will be aware that failing to improve performances in the coming months could see him get the sack.
