Roberto De Zerbi is personally backing a move for Piero Ausilio to join Tottenham, with the former Inter Milan sporting director’s future still potentially lying in England.
Ausilio has been linked with Spurs in recent months, and talk about the deal has returned this week.
According to Il Giornale, via Calciomercato, the move is still possible, and Tottenham are evaluating the idea.
Why Piero Ausilio left Inter Milan
Ausilio spent more than ten years at Inter in various roles, most recently as their sporting director. Throughout that time he had always signed one-year deals at the club.
Differences emerged over his latest renewal. Ausilio wanted higher wages, no agreement was reached, and links with Tottenham quickly followed. There was a belief that talks between the two parties had already been held.
Roberto De Zerbi is sponsoring the Piero Ausilio move
The most important detail is who is driving it. De Zerbi is keen on the move, and the report says he is effectively sponsoring it, with a very positive opinion of Ausilio’s skillset.
Ausilio’s knowledge of the Italian game would also come in handy. De Zerbi, who eventually took the Tottenham job after turning the club down first time around, clearly rates him highly.
What Piero Ausilio could bring to Tottenham
Working alongside Beppe Marotta, Ausilio helped Inter become a stable club with a clear identity, one that has regularly challenged for silverware in Italy. He has also worked in situations where clubs do not always spend big, with an approach built on being intentional and clever in the market while fixing problem areas.
Author Opinion
This one makes a lot of sense. Tottenham have spent significantly, but not always sensibly, and a director who knows how to build a squad without throwing money at every problem is exactly what De Zerbi needs alongside him.
The fact that the head coach is the one pushing for it matters too. Spurs have had their share of dealings with Inter already, and if Ausilio does arrive, he would land with the full backing of the man he would be working closest with.
