The club that had agreed personal terms with Spurs’ goalkeeper has quietly walked away and Tottenham are in no rush to find them a replacement

Guglielmo Vicario Tottenham Transfer

Inter Milan have effectively ended their pursuit of Guglielmo Vicario after weeks of pushing hard for the Tottenham goalkeeper, with TuttoSport reporting that Josep Martinez has now convinced Inter’s manager Cristian Chivu he is capable of being the club’s first-choice next season, removing the need for the Spurs stopper entirely.

The story has moved quickly. Nerazzurri sporting director Piero Ausilio had travelled to London to hold talks with Vicario’s agent about a potential summer switch. Personal terms had reportedly been agreed between the player and the club. Inter appeared to be closing in on a deal. And then the situation changed completely.

For Spurs, this is a quietly positive development. When Vicario arrived at Tottenham in the summer of 2023, the expectation was that he would be the cornerstone of the club’s goalkeeping position for the best part of a decade. This season has been more complicated than anyone anticipated, but the principle of not selling him for less than he is worth remains sound. Inter’s retreat gives Tottenham exactly the breathing room they need to wait for the right deal rather than being forced into a rushed sale.

Why Inter Milan dropped their Guglielmo Vicario interest

The key factor is Martinez. TuttoSport are confident that the Spaniard has impressed Inter’s management over recent weeks to the point where Chivu is now satisfied he can carry the first-choice role next season, particularly with Yann Sommer’s contract ending this summer. Martinez had been seen as second-choice behind the struggling Switzerland international, but his performances have changed that calculation entirely.

There is also a financial dimension. Genoa received €14 million when Inter signed Martinez two years ago, and the club are unwilling to make that investment redundant by spending heavily on Vicario when Martinez has now shown he can do the job. Inter’s view is that Vicario is not worth paying over €20 million given this change in circumstances, and Tottenham’s asking price sits above that threshold.

Gazzetta dello Sport add that despite the personal terms already in place between Vicario and Inter, Spurs have pulled back from the deal. They are in no hurry to sell and have made that position clear. With Antonin Kinsky having impressed since De Zerbi’s arrival, the urgency to move Vicario on simply does not exist.

Where Guglielmo Vicario could go if not Inter Milan

Inter are not the only Italian club who could need a goalkeeper this summer, which is why Spurs should feel comfortable about waiting. Juventus are in the market for a first-choice stopper. Fiorentina could be without David De Gea if he is not retained. Roma may look for a replacement if Mile Svilar leaves. Any one of those clubs could come in for Vicario, and Vicario’s agent Gabriele Giuffrida has extensive relationships across Serie A that should help find the right destination when the time comes.

That list of potential suitors is exactly why Tottenham hold the stronger position here than it might initially appear. The market for a goalkeeper of Vicario’s profile and age is not going away simply because Inter have moved on. Patience, in this case, is not a sign of weakness. It is the right strategy for a club that spent good money on a good goalkeeper and deserves to recoup a fair price when they eventually agree to let him go.
