Why Tottenham Hotspur might miss out on the Rennes star

Desire-Doue-Tottenham-Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur have been quite active in the transfer market so far, with a number of arrivals and departures. Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and Yang Min-Hyuk have signed for the club although the South Korean will not be joining now. Timo Werner has also returned to the club on loan for another season.

With regards to departures, the likes of Joe Rodon, Tanguy Ndombele and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg have left the club with Emerson Royal, Bryan Gil and Sergio Reguilon in the final stages of negotiating their departure. Gil is expected to leave only on loan though, with Girona interested in signing him.

One common theme in most of Ange Postecoglou‘s signing for Spurs is the desire to sign youngsters with high potential and give them a chance to thrive in the first team. We saw this with Micky van de Ven and Brennan Johnson last season and the trend is continuing with Gray and Bergvall. One more name they have been heavily linked with is Rennes wonderkid Desire Doue.

The 19-year-old winger is regarded as one of Ligue 1’s biggest talents and Spurs are not the only club interested in signing him. European giants PSG and Bayern Munich have identified Doue as a summer transfer target and have already made substantial bids to sign him. Rennes are yet to accept though.

Speaking about Spurs’ chances of signing Desire Doue, here is what Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano had to say, speaking in the Daily Briefing podcast: “I think he will not go to Spurs, it will be between PSG and Bayern. Bayern already presented a new bid €55m package, PSG’s bid is around €60m, exactly what Rennes want. I think it could be this week, but it’s not guaranteed yet.”

Prospective destination for prodigious talents

The N17 is definitely emerging as a prospective destination for prodigious talents but Doue looks unlikely to be one of those coming to North London. Not every target in the transfer market translates into a successful opportunity and Spurs must move on.

They have already signed the ‘next Son Heung-min’ who plays on the wings and will likely be planning for other targets. Signing a number nine is of utmost importance this summer and Spurs can’t afford to go into another season without a Harry Kane replacement.

Ange Postecoglou managed to get the best out of what resources he had last season by playing Son Heung-min as a striker but Spurs really missed a clinical presence upfront, especially in the latter half of last season. A lot of chances went begging and signing someone like Ivan Toney could help them in this regard.

Tottenham are also linked with a move for Canadian striker Jonathan David, who brings a wealth of experience with him and is likely to be available for a bargain due to his contract situation. This should be the North London’s club’s next priority in a transfer window. Missing out on Desire Doue is disappointing but it’s not the end of the world. It remains to be seen what else the club does in what is left of this transfer window.
