Mauricio Pochettino was a huge fan of Juan Foyth and had seen enough promise in Foyth to sign him from Estudiantes back in 2017. But things didn’t go as planned and Juan Foyth is in midst of a season-long loan move in Spain with his future blur.

Procuring Juan Foyth for just £8 million was seen as quite a bargain for Tottenham Hotspur, with it seeming that the Argentine would be at N17 for years to come.

The defender had spoken of how Pochettino’s preference to give young players a chance helped in his decision to sign for the club. But Mourinho eventually replaced Mauricio at Hotspur Way, young Foyth found chances hard to come by, and Jose preferring the experienced players in Toby Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez, and Jan Vertonghen over Foyth.

Foyth, then speaking to Argentine sports show Libero, made his stand clear: “If I have the chance to compete for a spot, I would like to stay at Spurs.”

The young prodigy was restricted to only 30 thirty appearances during his time in England.

With things going tough in England, Foyth found his opportunity in Spain. Juan Foyth joined La Liga side, Villarreal, on loan at the start of the 2020/21 season shortly after agreeing on a contract extension at Spurs.

Despite his new contract, his initial loan deal with Villarreal contained a purchase clause of €15 million.

Unai Emery is a big fan of the Argentine defender, recently admitting at a presser that he tried to bring Foyth to Paris Saint Germain before his move to Tottenham Hotspur and now former Arsenal manager is keen to keep him at Estadio de la Cerámica.

Juan Foyth has established himself in Emery’s Villarreal and there are several reports claiming that the Spanish side are keen to make his loan, a permanent deal. It won’t be difficult considering the buying option they have, but according to various reports in England suggest that Villarreal were looking to negotiate and bring that €15m fee down.

Although, AS put up a direct contradicting story claiming that Foyth has convinced his worth with his performances and Villarreal’s board won’t mind paying the buy-out clause.

But again, the footballing world is full of contradicting stories; La Razón claimed that despite Villarreal being determined to keep Juan, they will ‘not exercise’ the option but ‘try to reach an agreement’ for a lower amount. Though no particular amount is mentioned.

Now, Foyth has himself expressed his happiness in Spain and indicated that he’d be open to making it a permanent move. With both, the club and the player, happy – it’s time for Villarreal and Spurs board to sit at the table and negotiate a deal.
