Tottenham Hotspur are on the constant lookout for young talents with massive potential and have been linked with a move for Aston Villa academy graduate Jacob Ramsey throughout this transfer window. However, there seem to have been no significant negotiations between the two clubs as of yet.
23-year-old Ramsey made a name for himself during Steven Gerard’s managerial reign at Villa Park. The Liverpool legend places immense faith in the then-20-year-old who went on to establish himself as one of the biggest talents in the Premier League. However, the progress has seemingly slowed down in the past couple of seasons.
Injuries and inconsistency have halted Ramsey’s projected meteoric rise to stardom. Once tipped by Gerard for a Three Lions cap, this is the furthest that the Aston Villa man has been from making his England debut. However, at 23, he has a lot of time on his hands and the potential to succeed on the biggest stage.
Tottenham are looking to bring the youngster in when his chips are at the lowest, which would give them the chance to hopefully sign him on a bargain. However, that is unlikely to be the case, according to Alan Hutton. Speaking to Tottenham Hotspur News, here is what he had to say,
“I think Villa will ask for about £50million if I’m honest. He’s a top talent, he’s come through the youth ranks, they won’t want to sell him but they will know it is all profit. He’s so young, he’s got so much potential and he’s not hit his ceiling yet by any means so I think for him to go there, will he see that as a step up, the same level or a step backwards? It’s one of those where you look at Villa who are in the Champions League at this moment in time, they’re building for the future with experienced players and young players.”
Step backwards, seriously, Mr. Hutton?
Yes, Aston Villa are in the Champions League next season and Tottenham Hotspur are not. However, it is unlikely that Ramsey considers this move a step backwards, by any stretch of the imagination.
Under Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham are building one of the most exciting projects in world football. They have a clear philosophy, talented young players and a coach who is willing to put his nerve, heart and sinew into getting Spurs a long-awaited silverware. Which player wouldn’t want to be a part of this mission?
Johan Lange, Fabio Paratici and the other decision-makers at the club have been very smart with their transfer business. Gone are the days when Tottenham were clueless in the transfer market and their decisions often left fans pulling their hairs out. Ramsey would be an excellent addition in this regard.
However, it is unlikely that the North London club will pay £50m for Ramsey’s services. Villa are keen on keeping hold of their academy graduate and that is reflected in the possible asking price. It will be a huge surprise if this transfer goes through this summer but it’s good to see Spurs make all the right noises in the transfer market, yet again.
