Tottenham reportedly ‘working’ on a deal for Jannik Vestergaard

Southampton centre-back, Jannik Vestergaard, has been linked with a move to North London for a while now. A recent report by Tutto Mercato Web says that Tottenham Hotspur are working on a deal for the 28-year-old Danish international. Following Jose Mourinho’s sudden sacking as manager of Spurs, Ryan Mason has taken over as caretaker manager. Despite the change in management, Vestergaard reportedly remains a target for the sixth-placed club.

The defender has been at Southampton for nearly three full seasons now. With his contract expiring in July 2021, it will be interesting to see if the Saints cash in on him now. Vestergaard has been Ralph Hassenhutl’s go-to man at centre-back, starting in every single league game he’s been available for this season apart from the second game of the campaign against his rumoured suitors, Tottenham Hotspur.

His 6ft 6inches frame gives him a significant advantage in the air, which helps him win most of the aerial duels he contests. He’s been able to use this advantage even in the opposition’s box, scoring three goals in his 24 league starts this season.

Apart from his aerial ability, the Dane has also significantly improved his positional awareness and all-around defensive reading of the game. Something Spurs have lacked on multiple occasions this season. Toby Alderweireld at the age of 32 has looked a shadow of his former self, Davinson Sanchez is far too error-prone, and Eric Dier is simply not good enough to play centre-back for a “top-6” club. Maybe a move to Tottenham would make sense for Jannik, who could establish himself as the club’s leader at the back-line.

Vestergaard recently addressed the rumours of him moving to Tottenham. He said, “I can only say that, of course, it’s always a pat on the back with stories of interest from other big clubs. But, right now, I have a contract with Southampton, so it’s not something I can talk about.”

How many times have heard that though?
