According to Italian publication Calciomercato, Tottenham are set to rival SSC Napoli for the signing of Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta.
The French striker has been impressive this year after scoring two hat-tricks already on his way to hitting the ten goal mark just nine games in 20/21 season. This has caught the attention of many European clubs who are looking to reinforce their striking options with North London club Tottenham and Serie A club SSC Napoli currently said to be leading the race.
Even on U-21 levels, Mateta has scored three times for France and this has caught the attention of World Cup winning head coach Didier Deschamps despite their plethora of attacking options at the moment.
Summer signing Carlos Vinicus has yet to make an impression in the Premier League despite playing well in the limited amount of minutes in Europa League competition prompting Jose to consider his backup striking options.
Mateta was set to leave Mainz this season but has stayed put and has put himself firmly in the transfer window. As of writing there hasn’t been any fee mentioned, one has to assume he won’t cost absolute fortunes and the midseason transfer window has still one month to go so Spurs hierarchy have plenty of time to think about it.
