With all the Top 6 clubs strengthing their weaker areas in the summer, Tottenham Hotspur will be on the lookout for a new manager and if reports are to believed, Spurs are currently in contact with Inter Milan manager, Antonio Conte, who recently won the Serie A with the Nerazzurri.
Conte’s current contract with Inter Milan runs out in a year on June 2022, and due to this scenario, Spurs are trying to capitalize big time by hiring the Italian as their head coach for next season.
Why would Spurs want Antonio Conte?
Inter Milan won the Serie A last weekend, a trophy they last won under Jose Mourinho in the 2009/10 season. Since then it has been a flurry of victories by Juventus. However, this season, thanks to Antonio Conte’s tactics and the sensational Romelu Lukaku, Inter romped to the title with more than 3 weeks to the end of the season.
Spurs want a taste of a manager of the ilk of Conte and hence, the Lilywhites have made contact with the Italian regarding the managerial position for next season.
This, however, won’t be Antonio Conte’s first stint in England as he first arrived in 2016 at Chelsea, where he won the league in the first season and followed it up by an FA Cup victory in the next season. However, things turned sour between Chelsea and Conte towards the end of his second season and the Italian was sacked. This could be an added incentive for Conte to join rival Spurs next season if he wants to avenge his sacking against the Blues.
However, besides Conte’s personal motives, there is a lot to be admired about the Italian and his tactics. A proponent of a 3 man defence, Conte’s philosophy guarantees a solid defence and an exciting attack. However, this requires the proper players and an exceptional striker. Spurs tick both boxes for the Italian as with solid defenders and the freak that is Harry Kane, Antonio Conte will really enjoy managing Tottenham should he choose to join them.
Moreover Conte’s tactics would help Spurs in more ways than one. Trophies are a key goal for Tottenham and Conte can certainly deliver the biggest. Additionally, one of Conte’s key issues with Inter Milan last season was the lack of depth in the squad, a problem Spurs don’t have in their ranks. With a plethora of players in a lot of areas, Spurs have one of the deepest squads in the league. Something Conte can also do is lure some of his core members from Inter to Tottenham, mainly some of Conte’s workhorses in midfield, which could make Spurs a real force in the Premier League next season.
A secret that has also not been well kept by Inter Milan has been Conte’s sour relationship with the owners of the club, which could also play a key role in Conte’s decision. Spurs, however, might not be the most exciting option for Conte either but what Tottenham can sell is their exciting squad and the fact that Conte might be the first manager to win a trophy with the club in the modern era.
It is about time that Spurs win a trophy, and they surely have the squad to do so. While Jose Mourinho could not yield one out of this club, Conte will sure love winning one with the club, should he join Spurs. The next 3 years are extremely crucial for Tottenham as a lot of their players are at the peak of their powers and with the right manager, Spurs could be in the running for the biggest trophies in the years to come.
