According to reports, Tottenham Hotspur chairman, Daniel Levy, has been impressed with Vincent Kompany, who is his top managerial target for the club. Kompany is currently coaching Burnley, and his team clinched promotion to the Premier League in record time this season. As a result, he is being considered for the manager’s position at Spurs.
Levy is conducting a thorough search for the next manager of the club following the sacking of Antonio Conte in March. Interestingly, Levy has reportedly placed Manchester City icon, Vincent Kompany, at the top of his wish list.
Kompany has had an impressive first managerial stint in England. The former defender reconstructed Burnley’s team, making them the most exciting team to watch in the EFL. The Clarets have only suffered two defeats in the second tier and have a remarkable 90 points from 40 matches. This is the fastest any team has won promotion from the Championship, leaving other teams in their wake.
Levy has been impressed by Kompany’s performance and has received glowing reports on the former City captain. The Spurs chairman has seen how Mikel Arteta transformed Arsenal after working closely under Pep Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium for three years. Kompany won two of his four Premier League titles as captain under Guardiola. Levy apparently thinks the 37-year-old could replicate Arteta’s work and rebuild Spurs after several years of underwhelming performance since Mauricio Pochettino’s departure.
A six-man shortlist reportedly has Vincent Kompany firmly at the top. Pochettino’s return has not been ruled out either, but other top bosses are also being considered. Julian Nagelsmann, Luis Enrique, Brendan Rodgers, and Arne Slot make up the wish list alongside Kompany and Pochettino.
Kompany is reportedly ready to listen if Spurs make an offer. This is despite the chance to build on his work at Burnley by reinventing the Turf Moor outfit as an exciting Premier League club – the opposite of their reputation under the pragmatic but largely successful former boss, Sean Dyche.
Christian Stellini, Antonio Conte’s assistant, has been appointed as acting head coach until the end of the season. However, Spurs have underwhelmed in both matches in which they were led by the Italian. Stellini was even shown a red card during Spurs’ unconvincing 2-1 win over Brighton at the weekend.
There were chants for Pochettino to be appointed after Stellini was dismissed to the stands, showing that the fans still have affection for the former manager.
