Tottenham have been quite active in the transfer market as they look to give Ange Postecoglou the tools he requires at his disposal to take the North London club from the ‘best of the rest’ to serious ‘title contenders’. Spurs have had incomings in the form of Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall with Timo Werner joining on another loan this season.
There have also been exits. Tanguy Ndombele was let go of, after having his contract terminated. OM signed Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and it’s only a matter of time before Emerson Royal joins AC Milan. However, Spurs don’t seem to be done yet. According to Caught Offside, Ange Postecoglou has asked the club to prioritize a move for Federico Chiesa.
The Italian winger finds himself out-of-favour under Thiago Motta at Juventus. The ex-Bologna manager is spearheading a new project in Turin and wants to stamp his authority on the team. With the injury-prone winger’s contract expiring next summer, Juventus have made the decision to part ways with him.
This has prompted Premier League clubs to express interest in the 26-year-old. Not just Tottenham, Liverpool and Arsenal would also love the chance to sign the winger. The player himself is said to favour a move abroad which works well for any interested English club. Considering his contract situation, he is likely to be available on a bargain as well.
New lease of life at the N17?
Chiesa was once regarded as one of the most promising attackers coming up in Italy. His performances in the Euros 2020 where he helped his nation with the tournament will forever be written in Gli Azzurri folklore. During his peak, the 26-year-old was almost ‘unplayable’ and caused havoc to opposition defences.
An unfortunate ACL injury that he suffered has completely ruined Chiesa’s career since. Every since the injury, the Italian has been a pale shadow of his former self. He doesn’t seem as confident to take his man on anymore and this has taken away the explosiveness of his game to a large extent.
Everything said, Chiesa is still just 26 years old and what he needs may be a fresh start away from Turin. Ange Postecoglou is an excellent man-manager and could be the right person to help the Italian winger regain the confidence that seems to have deserted him. This could be a chance to wipe the slate clean.
The potential upsides of this transfer are huge and Spurs are right in pursuing a move for Chiesa. This is a low risk, high reward scenario. It remains to be seen if Tottenham take the gamble and sign the Euros 2020 star this summer.
