Tottenham Hotspur showing interest in Lille star

Angel-Gomes

According to GiveMeSport, Tottenham Hotspur are showing interest in signing Lille star Angel Gomes.

Gomes is a Manchester United academy graduate and left England for France in 2020. The 24-year-old has had a successful spell with Lille in the Ligue One and reportedly wants to move back to the Premier League when his contract ends in the summer. With around eight months left on his current deal with Lille, Gomes seems unlikely to extend his stay in France.

Considered one of the brightest prospects at Man United during his academy days, Gomes was promoted to the first team as a teenager. However, the midfield struggled to get regular game time and, as a result, turned down a contract extension offer from the Red Devils in 2020. The midfielder joined Lille on a free transfer, and after spending his first season on loan at Portuguese club Boavista, he became a key member of the French side’s lineup. In his three-and-a-half seasons at Lille, Gomes has made 128 appearances, scoring nine goals and assisting 19.

Tottenham will face competition for Gomes’ signature, with the midfielder’s former club Man United, Aston Villa, and Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund all monitoring his situation at Lille. While Gomes’ preferred destination is currently unknown, reports state that the England international will demand a hefty salary from any potential suitor. He is presently on a £11,000-a-week deal with Lille but will seek a monstrous salary north of £140,000-a-week from his next club. Spurs are reportedly unwilling to pay Gomes so much and may be priced out of a move if the midfielder does not reduce his wage demands.

Spurs may make a move for Gomes in the January transfer window, hoping to get him on a cut-price deal with his contract expiring in the summer. If Lille are unwilling to negotiate a transfer for him, Tottenham will then either look to sign a pre-contract with him or make a move for him when his contract runs out in June. However, any chances of signing him will depend on the midfielder’s wage demands.
