Writing on Football. London, Tottenham Hotspur correspondent Alasdair Gold has analyzed the club’s chances of signing exciting 21-year-old Spanish winger Nico Williams this summer.
Williams Jr. who plays his football for impressive La Liga side Athletic Bilbao alongside his older brother Inaki Williams has really caught the eye with his performances for the Spanish national team in the ongoing European Championship.
Spain have been the best side in the Euros so far by a comfortable distance, having a 100% record on their way to the semis. Their gameplay has been exciting to say the least and much of it has to do with the performances of Nico Williams and Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal on either wing.
Understandably, top clubs around the world have started appreciated Nico’s performances in this tournament and Spurs are no different. Chelsea wants to sign the 21-year-old Spaniard whilst Barcelona are also want to unite him with Yamal at the club level. Until now though, no concrete move has been made for the player considering the Euros are still going on.
Where do Tottenham sit in the food chain?
Reflecting on the same, here is what Alasdair Gold had to say about Spurs’ interest in the player although he does not fancy a move being successful this summer.
“The north London club love Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams but so do most of the biggest clubs in the world and the 21-year-old’s performances for Spain at Euro 2024 have only increased that. The problem doesn’t stop there either as despite a reported £49million up front release clause, the player also already earns £170,000 a week at Athletic Bilbao so the competition will drive that far higher for any potential suitor. So where Tottenham would sit in the food chain even if they did try to make a move for the Euros star remains to be seen.”
The thing that could be detrimental in any Tottenham approach for the Bilbao winger would be the fact that the North London club failed to qualify for the Champions League for this campaign. Without featuring in the top European competition, it would be difficult for the club to convince elite talent to come to the N17 despite building an exciting project.
Signing Nico would be decade-defining for the North London club but if we are being realistic, this move does not look like one that will happen. The player clearly seems to have his heart set for Barcelona where a lot of his friends and international teammates play as evidenced by his decision to discard Chelsea’s approaches.
If he continues on a similar trajectory, it’s only a matter of time before Nico Williams becomes one of the most deadly wingers in world football. It would be nice if Spurs can sign him but we must focus on pursuing more realistic targets this summer.
