Tottenham Hotspur are ‘eager to sign’ 21-year-old Argentine defensive midfielder Ezequiel Fernandez who plays for Boca Juniors, according to a report from Boca Noticias.
In fact, the report takes it one step further claiming that the North Londoners are willing to ‘go all out’ to sign a midfielder who is relatively unproven at the highest level of the game.
A defensive midfielder by trade, the Argentine is good at acting as a sweeper behind more creative midfielders up front and could prove to be a different option to the likes of Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma.
Fernandez has a contract with Boca until 2025. Considering that is not so far away in the context of the game, the upcoming summer might be the time for clubs to act on their interest in him.
Premier League clubs have kept their eye on the midfielder for quite some time now. Tottenham are the ones who seem likeliest to make a move for the 21-year-old ahead of next season.
Not the first Argentine Fernandez to come to the Premier League
If Ezequiel Fernandez does indeed join Spurs, he won’t be the first Argentine with the name Fernandez to come to the English topflight. Yes, we are talking about Enzo Fernandez.
The World Cup winner joined Chelsea from Benfica in January 2023 and although his performances have drawn criticism at times, there is no doubt that he is destined for greatness in the game.
The same can be said about Ezequiel as well. Oliver Skipp, although an academy graduate, has not really made the cut and Postecoglou doesn’t seem to view him anymore than a squad player.
The young Englishman might have to leave the club in search of regular game time elsewhere, opening up a spot in midfield. Let’s not forget the fact that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is expected to leave the club too.
Stylistically, Fernandez would suit Ange Postecoglou’s system perfectly and his age makes him a tantalizing prospect. The Australian tactician has shown during his time here that he isn’t afraid to throw a youngster into the mix.
If Spurs sign Ezequiel Fernandez, they’ll be getting a player with truckloads of potential. Whether he realises it is a different question but this is a game that the club must be willing to take. Let’s see.
