Tottenham to continue keeping faith in Ange Postecoglou

The Tottenham Hotspur board are reportedly set to continue putting their faith in manager Ange Postecoglou despite the team currently struggling in 12th place in the Premier League.

Spurs are targeting Champions League qualification but currently find themselves 12 points behind fourth-placed Chelsea. They will need a much better second half of the season to qualify for the Europa League or even the Conference League. However, Tottenham have been unlucky, with many key players injured.

The lack of availability of key personnel may be the reason why Spurs have not sacked Postecoglou yet. According to reputed journalist David Ornstein, the Australian’s job is “100% safe”.

“Ange Postecoglou is 100% safe in his job, I’m told. There is no uncertainty over his future despite the pressure he appears to be feeling in some of his public comments.” Ornstein told NBC News.

“They are backing him to lead this project forward, and they hope he delivers. They’ve got a chance of a League Cup trophy and a Europa League trophy, they’re focusing on that.

“And they’re also fighting to get into the top four, although they’re realistic about their chances on that.”

Despite the board’s support, Spurs fans are not convinced with Postecoglou. The manager has been criticised heavily for his stubbornness in the attack-oriented system he sets up Tottenham to play. Postecoglou’s unwillingness to change his system against certain opponents has been seen as an apparent lack of pragmatism.

Additionally, pundits were not happy with his comments after the Newcastle United game, in which they lost 2-1 at home. Postecoglou was furious at the refereeing performance and stated, “On a fair and even playing ground, we would have won“. However, pundits such as Alan Pardew and Gary Neville have criticised the Australian’s failure to take responsibility.

Spurs will back their manager in the January transfer window, with their first signing already announced recently. However, should Tottenham fail to break into the top seven by the end of the season, Postecoglou is likely to get the sack.
