Chelsea have been linked with a shock move to sign former Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane, with the Bayern Munich star eyeing a surprise return to the Premier League, according to a report by El Futbolero.
Look away, Spurs fans. You aren’t ready for this! Seeing Kane wear another club’s jersey is something that no Tottenham fan would have imagined of, prior to this season. Seeing him play for their Premier League rivals though might be too bitter a pill to swallow.
Yet, if reports are to be believed, Harry Kane could be back to England just a season after leaving the country and shifting bases to Munich. Whilst the 30-year-old hasn’t slowed down one bit, the same cannot be said about Bayern Munich as a club.
Kane left Tottenham, a club he spent 19 years of his career at for one reason – silverware. Despite coming close on several occasions, the English superstar never managed to win a trophy with the Lilywhites, and he decided that it was time to jump ship.
Harry Kane might be ‘cursed’
So yes, Kane wanted trophies. He decided to leave Spurs. Where did he decide to go? Bayern Munich. The German giants are perennial winners. They have won the Bundesliga continually for 11 seasons in a row now, but it increasingly looks like there isn’t going to be a 12th.
The reason – Xabi Alonso. The Spanish midfielder, one of the best during his playing days has taken the Bundesliga by storm with his management. Under the Liverpool legend, Bayer Leverkusen have taken their game to the next level and are currently eight points ahead of Harry Kane’s team.
Bayern have already lost both domestic cups this season and find themselves in deficit against Lazio heading into the second leg of the Champions League Round of 16 against the Italian side. In the first season that Kane has joined them, the German side run the risk of going trophyless.
Even if Kane and Bayern were to fail to win trophies this season, it’ll not be wise of the Englishman to abandon ship after only one season. Let’s be realistic here. The German giants might have a blip, but they are still in a better position in their project than Chelsea are.
Signing for the Blues might give Harry Kane a shot at eclipsing Alan Shearer and maybe a run at the FA Cup or the Carabao Cup, but the Premier League and Champions League will remain a far-fetched dream. Ideally, it’ll be better off for Kane to keep fighting it out in Germany, for the sake of his career and his Tottenham legacy.
