Harry Kane signs a new Bayern deal to 2029, but Tottenham still hold the first option on any return

Harry Kane has signed a new contract at Bayern Munich that runs until June 2029, but Tottenham have not lost their right to match any bid for their record goalscorer.

The Ballon d’Or winner put pen to paper in Munich on Thursday, ending weeks of talk about his future. For Spurs fans, the bigger question was what would happen to the first-option clause agreed when he left N17 in the summer of 2023.

According to the Daily Telegraph, that agreement is still in place. It was part of the deal that took Kane to Germany, it sits outside his playing contract, and the new terms do not touch it.

Do Tottenham still have a Harry Kane clause?

Yes. Spurs negotiated first-option matching rights with Bayern before the transfer was finalised, and the agreement covers his whole time at the club. Any extension, including this one, leaves it alone.

In plain terms, if another club ever makes a bid that Bayern accept, Tottenham can match it. It does not force Kane back to north London, but it keeps Spurs at the front of the queue.

That is a turnaround from late October, when Bayern were said to want the clause removed as part of fresh talks. The Bundesliga champions got their man tied down, and Tottenham kept their leverage.

What did Kane say about his new Bayern deal?

The England captain made clear his head is in Munich for now. Kane said: “I feel right at home at FC Bayern. I love the club, the fans and the city of Munich. We have a fantastic team and, in Vincent Kompany, a fantastic manager. It makes me very proud to be part of this club.”

“My whole family is very happy here. I was keen to stay. I’m now looking forward to the future and I want to win many more titles with this great club,” he added.

Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen called it “fantastic news for us, for our fans and for the Bundesliga”, adding that Kane’s extension is “a commitment to FC Bayern and to a story that is far from over.”

156 goals in 161 games

The numbers explain why Bayern wanted him locked down. Kane, 33, has scored 156 goals in 161 appearances since joining, winning two Bundesliga titles and a German Cup on top of the Ballon d’Or. His new deal is reported to be worth around £400,000 a week.

Before that he scored 280 goals in 435 games for Spurs between 2009 and 2023. He also remains the second-highest scorer in Premier League history on 213 goals, 47 behind Alan Shearer.

Could Kane still come back to Spurs?

Kane will be approaching his 36th birthday when the new deal ends, so a return before then looks unlikely. But Tim Sherwood, his former Spurs boss, thinks the door is not shut.

Sherwood told talkSPORT: “I think when he comes back, he’s going to come back to a team he thinks can win. He’s used to winning trophies now, he’s enjoying his time over there at Bayern. I don’t think he comes back to a team that he thinks can’t win, so it narrows it down.”

“He’s not going to go to Chelsea, he’s not going to go to Arsenal, so where is he actually going to end up? It’s probably not going to be Man City, so you’re only looking at Liverpool, Man United and possibly Tottenham,” he said. “I mean, Tottenham have got more chance of winning something at the moment, as you look at it, than Man United certainly have.”

Why the Harry Kane clause still matters for Tottenham

Nobody at Hotspur Way should be planning around a Kane reunion. Roberto De Zerbi has his own striker to get firing, and Spurs were reported last month to be in no rush to sell Dominic Solanke.

Still, keeping the clause is a quiet win. Bayern clearly wanted a clean slate, and Spurs held on. If Kane ever wants one last Premier League chapter, perhaps with Shearer’s record in sight, Tottenham get the first say. Three straight league wins under De Zerbi will not hurt that pitch either.
