‘Their own little Rio Ngumoha’: Steven Gerrard says Tottenham’s 18-year-old debutant is one to watch, in capitals

Luca Williams Barnett

Steven Gerrard has seen one cameo from Luca Williams-Barnett and already reckons Tottenham have a player on their hands, comparing the 18-year-old to Liverpool forward Rio Ngumoha.

The academy prospect made his Premier League debut as a late substitute in Tottenham‘s 2-0 win over 10-man Crystal Palace last Saturday. He was only on the pitch for the closing stages, but one burst down the left was enough to catch the eye of the former England and Liverpool captain.

Speaking on The Overlap Daily, Gerrard went further than most pundits would after a few minutes of football. He called the teenager one to watch, and he wanted it written in capitals.

What did Steven Gerrard say about Luca Williams-Barnett?

Gerrard admitted the name was not new to him. He said: “I have heard his name mentioned to me through the England ranks a few times.”

He was happy to give Spurs credit for the result too, adding: “If I am a Tottenham fan, I am going away buzzing with the result and the win and the clean sheet, and Spurs are obviously in this new place, this new confidence, but this young kid is going to be a player.”

Then came the bit that will have N17 grinning. Gerrard said: “I have seen enough in the cameo… He went on this little jinky run down the left and he put a cross, a ball across the front. It was like the Declan Rice cross. I just thought to myself, they have got their own little Rio Ngumoha.”

He signed off with: “So look out for this boy, I really like him… the young boy, Williams-Barnett, one to watch, in capitals.”

The run that started it all

The moment Gerrard was talking about came with the points already safe. Williams-Barnett broke down the wing and crossed for Mohammed Kudus, who could not finish. It went down as a debut rather than a debut assist, which sums up a winning run in which Spurs have left chances behind in front of goal.

Roberto De Zerbi had already made his feelings clear after the game, calling the youngster a great talent. We went through everything De Zerbi said about the debut at the weekend, and Gerrard’s view is now sitting right alongside it.

Williams-Barnett himself called the night a “dream come true”, which is about as honest a summary as an 18-year-old can give.

How long has he been around the first team?

Longer than his age suggests. He was first named in a senior matchday squad at 16, under Ange Postecoglou in 2024-25, so the step up has been coming for a while. Saturday was simply the first time the Premier League crowd got a proper look at him.

Should Tottenham fans get excited about Williams-Barnett?

Yes, but with a little patience. A former England captain saying he has heard the name through the England set-up tells you the youngster is already on a few radars.

The Ngumoha comparison is the interesting part. Gerrard has watched Ngumoha closely, and he saw the same kind of directness in a few minutes at N17. That is a big compliment for a lad with one Premier League appearance to his name.

The trick now is not to rush him. Spurs are in a good spell under De Zerbi, three wins on the bounce and confidence flowing, and that is the best possible environment to bring a young player along. Saturday’s trip to Leeds is next, as covered in our Leeds vs Tottenham preview, and nobody should expect him to be thrown in from the start at Elland Road. A few more late cameos like the one against Palace, though, and the “one to watch” tag will stick for good.
