Andy Robertson has singled out Mathys Tel as the outstanding performer in Tottenham’s 2-0 win at Chelsea, praising the Frenchman’s movement in behind and his hold-up play at Stamford Bridge.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side were the better team in west London. An own goal from Mike Penders broke the deadlock late in the second half, and Tel then settled the contest with a fantastic solo effort. Our full report on the Chelsea 0-2 Tottenham win has the detail on how the goals arrived.
A lot has been said about Mathys Tel this season as he continues to deliver the required end product, and Robertson clearly feels the winger was a big part of a statement win at the home of the Blues.
What did Andy Robertson say about Mathys Tel?
Robertson was in the thick of it at Stamford Bridge and spoke to Sky Sports after the game. The man playing in front of him was the first name on his list.
Robertson said: “Mathys Tel in front of me was outstanding today. He gave us a lot of options in behind and to hold the ball up. I thought our midfield was outstanding, and the defence was good with the ball at our feet as well.”
It is a neat description of what Spurs did well. Tel gave the Lilywhites an out ball in behind and a reference point to hold it up, and that is exactly the kind of work that lets a side play through a team rather than around it.
How did Tottenham beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge?
Robertson was just as keen to credit the collective. He said Tottenham moved Chelsea around and took them into areas where they were probably a bit uncomfortable.
Robertson added: “It’s not an easy place to come, Stamford Bridge, and to show that confidence, have the possession stats we had and keep the ball so well is a credit to all the lads. I’m glad we got the goals in the end as well.”

The defender also pointed to the work that has gone on behind the scenes. In comments shared on X, Robertson said you can see the quality within the squad and that it was about piecing it all together after a lot of change in the summer, when Tottenham signed a lot of players and lost a few.
Is Mathys Tel’s end product good enough for Tottenham?
That is still the question. Tel’s end product needs to improve for him to become a reliable Premier League attacker, and nobody at N17 should pretend otherwise.
But when he gets it right, he is some player to watch in full flow. At Stamford Bridge he silenced the home crowd with a goal for the ages, and it earned praise from a team-mate who watched it all unfold in front of him.
For De Zerbi, that is the encouraging part. Praise from a team-mate, a win against Chelsea and a winger starting to show what he can do in the final third is a very good place to be heading into the next run of games.
