Bournemouth’s best defender is leaving for free and Aston Villa are already beating Tottenham to him

Marcos Senesi has informed Bournemouth of his decision to leave when his contract expires this summer, and a four-way battle is taking shape between Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur, Juventus and Borussia Dortmund for the Argentine centre-back, according to TuttoSport with the English clubs’ wage offer emerging as a decisive advantage.

The 28-year-old has made 30 Premier League appearances this season and is widely regarded as one of the better centre-backs outside of the top six.

With no fee involved, the competition for his signature is expected to be fought entirely on wages and project appeal. That is where the English clubs are winning.

Both Aston Villa and Tottenham are prepared to offer €4m per season, significantly above the €3m four-year deal Juventus have put on the table.

Senesi wants to play for a top club at 28, and the financial gap between the Italian offer and what the Premier League clubs can provide is proving hard to bridge.

Juventus (like Tottenham) are also unable to guarantee Champions League football next season, which removes one of the key incentives a player of his profile would typically look for when weighing up a move to Serie A.

Borussia Dortmund face a similar problem, they are offering higher wages than Juve but still fall short of the Villa and Spurs package, and their European position for next season is equally uncertain.

Barcelona are also monitoring the situation, with reports suggesting Senesi’s entourage may be waiting to see whether the Catalan side make a formal approach. That remains the wildcard in the race.

Both clubs are offering the same salary, which means the decision comes down to project and stability.

On that basis, Villa have a clear structural advantage.

Under Unai Emery they are pushing for Champions League qualification, represent one of the most coherent projects outside the traditional top six, and offer a defensive setup where Senesi’s profile fits naturally. He is a composed, left-footed centre-back who plays out from the back and can operate in a high defensive line (exactly what Emery demands).

Tottenham’s pitch is harder to make. They are still fighting relegation, have changed managers multiple times this season, and while Roberto De Zerbi’s arrival has brought some stability, the broader structural uncertainty at the club is difficult to ignore for a player looking to take the next step in his career.

If Micky van de Ven departs this summer as expected, Senesi would get regular football at Spurs, but that may not be enough compensation for the instability that comes with it. Villa Park, in that context, looks like the significantly more attractive destination.
