Djed Spence, like most of Tottenham Hotspur’s squad, has had a mixed season. He is now being targeted for what would be an unexpected summer transfer.
Sport Witness have covered Juventus’ interest in Destiny Udogie, who is seen as a replacement for Andrea Cambiaso. Calciomercato IT explained the London club’s potential relegation could see a transfer happen. The Italian is not the only full-back option from Tottenham who is desired in Turin.
Spence, who has previously spent a loan at Genoa, is emerging as a target for the Bianconeri. Today’s Gazzetta dello Sport covers a transfer to Juventus in the summer. The newspaper reports that Juve are firm in their opinion that Spence will be a quality European-level addition to the team. This is mainly because he has played quite a bit in the Champions League, with the Old Lady trying to come up with a squad that stays consistently in the top four of Serie A.
It is stated Tottenham would want around €30 million for the former Middlesbrough player. This comes after Spence signed a new contract last year. The player’s versatility is one key reason behind a possible move. Andrea Cambiaso is someone who can play in a variety of positions and so can Spence, who can fill in for the Italy international.
Juventus set €30m price for Djed Spence transfer
Pierre Kalulu’s future is also in doubt. If he leaves, Juve will be desperate for full-back signings and a move for the 25-year-old is being strongly considered. AS Roma’s Zeki Celik is also on the shortlist, as his contract runs out in the summer. Sporting director Marco Ottolini knows Spence well already, having been in charge at Genoa when the defender arrived on loan from Tottenham.
Considering how Juve operate, they would much rather move for Celik instead of Spence. The Turk also boasts European experience, perhaps more of it than the Tottenham man. He is a bit older but would join for free, with Roma struggling to tie him down to a renewal.
Tottenham relegation could accelerate Spence departure
The London club’s possible relegation might just change things, though. Juve and Tottenham have dealt regularly in the past for players like Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski. They can also be involved in a possible move for Guglielmo Vicario too. Spurs’ situation is attracting interest from clubs around Europe, circling like transfer vultures.
It is unusual for a squad of such quality to be relegated, so if that happens then there will be a rush to pick up the pieces. Spence represents one of several Tottenham assets that could be available at reasonable prices if the worst happens. His Champions League experience makes him attractive to clubs competing in Europe’s elite competition.
Spence versatility appeals to Juventus
It is fair to say that the Spurs man would be an opportunistic signing for the Old Lady. The fact that he has played in Italy and knows Ottolini will only help. His ability to operate in multiple positions across the backline gives Juventus tactical flexibility, something they value highly in their recruitment.
Whether Juventus ultimately pursue Spence or opt for the cheaper Celik option remains to be seen. Tottenham’s fate in the Premier League will likely determine how aggressively Juventus push for the deal. If Spurs go down, the €30 million asking price could drop significantly, making Spence a more attractive proposition for the Italian giants during the summer transfer window.
